|
|
Hi all,
For a couple of weeks i've been using my 24-85N on my eos 5dII. With great results. When i try to use it for making videos something strange is happening. When i switch to live-view and change aperture or change the focal length so the minimum aperture changes from 3,5 to 4,5 the camera locks up or live view is aborted. I have to remove the battery to be able to use the camera again. At first i thought it was random but i am now able to make this error happen on other cameras as well (all 5dII's).
Anyone here with similar problems? And a solution?
Step by step:
- use the live view settings as described on this website to use aperture control
- set the lens to 24mm
- enter live view
- start filming
- during filming change the focal length from 24 to 85mm (maybe a couple of times)
- AND/ OR change aperture during filming
- live view locks up... / camera locks up
Update:
- My camera has firmware 2.08 (latest)
- The lens has firmware 3.14h
Thanks,
Sander |

Sander,
Thank you for your problem report. Sorry I have not been able to reproduce this problem yet. I filmed for about 5 minutes both zooming from 24 to 85 back and forth repeatedly and also changed the aperture ring frequently.
1, What is the firmware version of the 5D2 camera body? (Mine was 2.0.7.)
2, What is the exposure dial set to? (I set to Av, not sure if it makes any difference.)

No suggestions? Bo-Ming have you tried the combination of Manual mode with firmware 2.08?

Sorry under LV func. setting, did you choose
1, stills display,
2, exposure simulation, or
3, movie display?
And, was it 24, 25 or 30 fps?
Thanks. |

Hi,
I used exposure simulation @ 24fps.
Thanks,

Hi Sander,
Sorry I am still unable to replicate the hang-up problem with my 5D mark II and 24-85 yet.
If any other customer is experiencing the same problem, please kindly let us know.
I tried various things, like different Canon firmware versions, different Conurus firmware versions, various LiveView settings, various exposure modes, various zoom positions and various apertures (both set on camera and on lens). I cannot make my camera hang.
It is possible that this problem occurs with only one lens. I suppose the best course of action is for you to send us your lens and we will further investigate.
Thank you very much! |

Hi Bo-Ming,
My Canon tech-repair offered to have a look at the lens-body combination. I agreed to let them do this and expect to get my camera body and lens back in a couple of weeks. I'll keep you informed on the outcome.
If this doesn't bring any new info i'll send the lens back to you so you can investigate further..
Regards,
Sander |

I am finally able to replicate this problem with my 100/2.8. My lens would record for only about 20 to 40 seconds, then stops on its own.
I think this problem is very elusive because it seems that only some lenses are affected with this reliability issue during movie recording, and it may also depend on the firmware version of the camera body. However, an upgrade to firmware 3.18 will resolve this problem. I can now always capture a video file up to 4GB without interruption with my 100/2.8. That's about 12 minutes at 30fps HD.
If other people do not experience this problem there is no need to upgrade the firmware because this appears to affect only some of the lenses. _________________ I am a bird and I uncovered the E, EF and N-mount communication protocols! |

Hi Bo-Ming,
I'm glad you are finally able to replicate the problem i am having with my lens - body combination. And there is a solution!
I can pick my lens and body up tomorrow at my local canon tech-repair. They've already informed me they couldn't find anything unusual...
So i'll send the lens in for a firmware upgrade? Please inform me on how to proceed.
Thanks,
Sander |

Hi Bo-Ming,
I finally got around to sending the lens in for a firmware upgrade (and af-check) due to some extensive work related travelling across the globe. So the lens is on it's way. Please let me know if you are able to replicate the issues i have with the lens..
Thanks,
Sander
PS i noticed your sticky on the canada post strike after i went to the post office... |

Thanks!
Even though we can neither send nor receive any packages at this time, we feel very positive that the labour dispute is going to be resolved very quickly. _________________ I am a bird and I uncovered the E, EF and N-mount communication protocols! |

Hi Bo-Ming,
Has my lens arrived yet? I'm kind of worried because the tracking website for my parcel states that the package has arrived in Canada 8 days ago... Is there any way to follow the status of my lens on your website?
Thanks,
Sander |

| No, we have not received your package yet. Even though Canada Post has already reopened, the mail is very slow due to the backlog. Please email us your tracking number and we will keep an eye on your package. |
